Some of the benefits of effective intergenerational communication for both younger and older participants include:

Young participants:

  • They receive vocational experience from the older participants.
  • They gain new life experiences and memories.
  • They can create useful relationships and contacts, older people can act as “door-openers” and “role models” whilst young people are looking for jobs.
  • Important for the self-development of the youth and there is a transmission of tradition.

Older participants

  • They are able to share their life experiences (which can help tackle social isolation)
  • They create new contacts and relationships with youth
  • They are able to catch up with subjects and language that is used by youth (can help tackle social isolation)
  • They can develop skills related to new technologies
  • Their free time is spent usefully and productively
